Welcome To My Solo Blog

Welcome to my Glengarry solo blog. Below you will find reflections from my Glengarry three-day solo. You will find video interviews from during and after my solo. You will hear some of my thoughts at night as things were getting dark and a little scary. I will have photos of the things I built and created as well as some of the highlights and hardships.

Enjoy this great journey with me.

There are 3 pages to my blog. Make sure you click "older posts" at the bottom of each page so you see all my entries.

Slides From My Solo

Here are some photos from my solo.

This Is My Solo Site

This photo shows you the location of my solo site. It was situated in the open not far from Lake Yurrunga. I liked this spot because it was open a grassy and had lots of wildlife. One challenge I did find about this area was that it was hot during the day because I did not have much shade.

What Is The Purpose Of Solo?

Well many of you may think it is kind of weird to do a three-day solo. I thought I should tell you why we do this at Glengarry. There are a number of reasons.

For the whole semester we have been hiking with 20 other kids, you never get away from them. Solo is a time to get away and think and try and put together some meaning out of this Glengarry experience.

We had to write a letter home to ourselves which I will receive in one-years time. I had to reflect on what Glengarry had taught me and how I might use this to achieve my future goals.

The Night Approaches: I am a little worried!

It slowly sneaks up on you, the sun is there all day and you keep busy getting your campsite ready and then before you know it the sun is going down below the horizon. You get a feeling of something changing, you get anxious. What is it going to be like. Have I got the courage to be strong even though I am scared? I took this video as the sun was setting.

Reflections After My First Night Alone

I was quite nervous to be on my own camping in the middle of nowhere by myself. My imagination was going wild with possibilities of axe murders to snakes and spiders. I did however surprise myself and felt confident as I went through the night.

My Bush Shelter

During solo we had to construct a bush shelter. I built the frame for a shelter. During the day I made a bed and laid down and read my book and had a sleep. Here it is in the video below.

What You Can Learn From Cooking Toast

Here is my great toasting device that I built. As you can see I used it lots for cooking my toast. I did however learn some important lessons about sequencing my construction. The videos below tells a story of how I got the order of building around the wrong way!

Oh I Miss My Family At Home

I don't know what happens but when you just have so much time to think your mind starts to wonder. I began thinking of my home and family and all of a sudden got really home sick. You have to keep your mind strong and get busy with your tasks otherwise thinking negatively can get you down.

What The Hec, It Is An Echidna Passing By!

I was just sitting in my camp and then just not far away an Echidna came wondering by. I followed it for a little way. The following shows him meandering along, then he senses I am there and it tries to bury itself.

Kangaroos Visit Near My Solo Site

Once you are sitting around quietly at camp the local animals get used to you and don't run off. I was just sitting at camp doing some whittling when I looked up and saw these roos feeding. One of them had a little Joey in its pouch, it was reaching out and learning to eat grass.

The Cycle Of Life

I have been seeing lots of wild life around camp but on a little walk I came across this poor wombat who had died at the entrance of his hole. I guess this is the cycle of life out here in the bush.

There's A Goanna In The Tree Over There!

Again I was amazed at how the bush comes alive with animals once you just sit and take it all in. I heard some crunching in the bush and then this huge Goanna climbed up this big Grey Gum tree.

Bread and Water For Dinner

While it does not look like much my bread and water dinner was awesome. There is something about making your own toaster and cooking it on the fire. I did use the water for cooking some pasta!

Reflections At The End Of Day Two!

Time seems to go so quick when you are on solo. I have been very busy all the second day, here I captured my thoughts as I headed into my second night on my own.

What I Missed Most While On Solo.

You have lots of time to think on solo, my family seemed to come up alot in my thinking. Here I am talking about what I missed most to my teacher Mr Nickell.

Time To Leave: Restoring My Site To How It Was!

Prior to departing I had to clean and clear my site returning it to how it was prior to me arriving. I had mixed emotions at this time, firstly I was glad to be going home and to see how everyone else had gone, but I was going to miss my special place because......
